Marche Jean Talon, Montreal

I found some fresh fruit and vegetable markets called Marche Jean Talon in the Little Italy District atĀ 7070 Avenue Henri JulienĀ in Montreal and ever since, I drive all the way to Montreal to get fresh Fruit and Vegetables. The fruit and veg on sale here comes from the farms in Quebec, Canada. It is good but you need to shop around each stall and pick the best produce. Canada is known for their strawberries so you see them in nearly every stall.

The farmers market has been around since 1933 to the public. It was a field before then. It is open all year round however in winter, there are fewer stalls and they build a big wall around the complex for the excessive cold periods of winter.

The flowers are fabulous too and I wrote more about them below with the photos. My favourite place at the market is one of the permanent stall shops across from the side entrance. It stocks the best watermelon I have tasted. I spoke with the owner of the place about the watermelon and he said that they hunt around for ages to find the best ones to sell. I like that. I have no problem driving further to eat great watermelon. When you are home in summer, and you bring it out of the fridge, nice and cool, well, it’s like eating great dark chocolate sorbet in my books. It’s just sublime. The simple things in life are often best.

They hang off the edge, or off the windows. Gives the whole place a very French feel too. They are so beautiful and bright. It is a huge thing here in the summer for everyone to go out and plant their flowers and show them off. They really do have the four seasons and they make the most of them.
